What is Social health?
One site describes it as “Social health involves your ability to form satisfying interpersonal relationships with others. It also relates to your ability to adapt comfortably to different social situations and act appropriately in a variety of settings”. Another explains it as “Social wellness is the ability to build personal connections with others, deal with conflict and to be a part of a positive social network.”
These sites describe it pretty well. To put it into my own words, Social health is how good you are with people; being able to form relationships; able to not make awkward situations; and feeling secure when you are around other people.
Why should I maintain my Social Health? A well maintained social health can lead to:
· Sense of belonging and purpose
· Reduced stress
· Better recovery of illness
· Improved academic performance
· Longer life expectancy
You need to develop healthy relationships in order to keep your Social Health in check, here are 5 main qualities you will need to have a healthy relationship:
· Safety
· Honesty
· Acceptance
· Respect
· Enjoyment
If you do not keep up your social health you may become susceptible to social anxiety disorder. Some symptoms include:
· Fear of situation in which you may be judged
· Worry about embarrassing or humiliating yourself
· Concern that you offend someone
· Avoiding situation where you might become the center of attention
· Expecting the worst possible consequences from a negative experience during a social situation
Physical symptoms can erupt from having bad social health can include:
· Fast heartbeat
· Upset stomach or nausea
· Dizziness or lightheadedness
What does the Bible say about social health?
1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
This verse shows how we must choose our friends wisely or else we might learn their ways
Genesis 2:18: Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him”
God knows it is not good for man to be alone, trying to make friends is good.
Proverbs 22: 24-25“Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared.”
This one again shows that you must choose your friend wisely, or they might rub off on you.
